October 2015 - Monthly Meeting

Tuesday, October 13, 2015
5:30 - 7:00 pm

First United Methodist Church, Room 21, Basement
420 N Nevada Ave.
Colorado Springs, CO 80903

Our guest speaker was Val Stevenson, a member of First United Methodist Church ("FUMC") since 1989. During most of her time at FUMC, Val has been involved in mission and outreach ministry. She coordinates the "First Stars" Christmas program, which is a collaboration between local elementary school community liaisons and the congregation to provide gifts for children of impoverished families. She coordinates FUMC's "adoption" of North Middle School, partnering with the school administration to provide school supplies and other items needed for the students. Val was a member of the FUMC refugee resettlement ministry, assisting families that relocated to Colorado Springs from Africa who were fleeing the war in Liberia. Several years ago, Val helped to establish the Human Justice Ministry ("HJM") at FUMC. The HJM was formed after several members attended a human trafficking conference and were shocked to learn that slavery still existed in the world. The main purpose of the HJM is to raise awareness about human trafficking and to support and partner with local organizations that aid victims who have been trafficked and are working to abolish slavery. The HJM began with a screening of "The Dark Side of Chocolate" and has continued to arrange screenings of documentaries focused on justice issues. The ministry has involved the congregation in projects to support Restore Innocence - donating survivor bags and supporting a girl who was rescued from sex trafficking. The HJM has organized several speaking events, including two Freedom Sunday worship services.

Val was born in Florida and moved to Colorado in 1988. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a master's degree in accounting and is currently self-employed. In addition to her involvement in ministry at FUMC, Val is a member of the BOD for Catholic Charities of Central Colorado.
